WHO IS IT FOR?
This webinar course is ideal for students who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Korean tea history, types of teas made in Korea, different tea terroirs, tea culture, and current tea trends in South Korea.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
In this masterclass, we will trace the history of the South Korean tea industry from its beginnings in the 6th Century AD, through suppression of tea by Confucionism in the 14th century AD, the revival of Korean tea culture in the 19th century, and the growing interest in tea today.

The four main regions will be explored, with details of their history and cultivation today. And we will be discussing and tasting a selection of green teas and their seasons, ‘hwang-cha’ (a semi-oxidised tea), black teas, and Korean dark tea.

We will also explore the South Korean ‘tea ceremony’ with an explanation of the Korean approach to tea brewing, the utensils used, the brewing method itself, and the current movement that aims to encourage more people to revive the traditional ritualistic brewing ceremony and extend the growing love of tea throughout the country.

Over £100 worth of more than 20 carefully selected teas are included in your course price and will be mailed to you before the course begins.

The course will be delivered in 4 webinars as follows:

Webinar 1: History of Korean tea
Webinar 2: Korean tea types and terroirs (Hadong)
Webinar 3: Terroirs (Boseong, Jeju & other regions)
Webinar 4: Korean tea rituals, Korean herbal teas & current trends

WHAT WILL I NEED?

  1. Computer/phone to access the webinars on Zoom
  2. Basic brewing equipment (Kettle and infuser to brew loose tea samples that will be sent to participants). We will confirm in writing the list of equipment needed, once booking has been made.

I enjoyed Sujin’s class very much and received so much new knowledge on Korean teas, culture and history, the collection of teas she sent really expressed that cultural background, so many beautiful teas. I’m actually looking forward to future classes with Sujin.

Sujin’s Korean Tea Masterclass offers not only a chronologically well-structured and insightful sketch of where, how and why certain key moments in regards of tea have taken place on the peninsular in course of its history and as reflected in its material cultural heritage. Being a beginner with little knowledge on Korea in general I have learned even more;

Further, by contextualizing those developments in the sociopolitical and economic landscape of the macro-region, one can as well better grasp both the similarities between and the particularities of various tea traditions co-existing in its surrounding East Asian neighborhood (including countries such as China and Japan);

Not to mention the carefully chosen, overwhelmingly rich selection of tasting samples, which never failed to virtually wake the dry leaves (alias PPT-slides containing fact-based theory), to magically enfold into a floating world filling one’s cup in just a few minutes and to encourage everyone in the class to share sensory impressions in vivid group discussions. As a peer group we had got the opportunity to learn from and with each other, sip by sip to improve all together. Thanks to the interactive live webinar one might easily forget that we actually live in different time zones far apart. The homework varying in format allowed an individual round off following each session, adding another layer towards a playful, inclusive and balanced learning experience;

Last but not least, historically loaded sensitive (e.g. ethic, national) issues as well as controversially debated contemporary trends which keep shaping the dynamics of tea and its industry are hardly spared, on the contrary, various inputs are introduced and discussed in such a constructive manner, that I really want to – by continuing to drink and think beyond – dive even deeper into the topic of Korean tea!

Thank you very much, Sujin, for sharing your profound expertise and wide range of personal experience, and without the wonderfully diverse yet equally attentive and motivating peers, I would not have come out this masterclass feeling warm in my heart, carrying hope in my mind… I wonder if Lu Yu could possibly have had a better learning environment to start with ;).
