Bulerias 😎 Summer Intensive August & Calle Flamenca BBQ Party

Bulerias Summer Intensive & BBQ Street Party

Monday-Wednesday, August 19-21: 7:00-8:30 pm at Halifax Dance

Thursday, August 22, 6:00-8:00 pm Calle Flamenca Free Street BBQ Fiesta (optional) @ Aurora North Church

The Bulerias are a festive form of flamenco, known for being incredibly fun to dance, clap along, and sing to. Often referred to as the late-night “kitchen party” music and dance of flamenco, Bulerias are upbeat and playful. They involve as much playing palmas (clapping) and shouting jaleos (encouragements) to build momentum for others to dance as they do actual dancing.

In this course, we will learn a “patá” por bulerias, a simple, multilevel dance sequence that incorporates the key components of a short bulerias dance. We will also focus on the compás (rhythmic clapping and groove) and learn some of the lyrics to understand the form more deeply.

Guitarists and pecusssionists are welcome to participate!

Open Level: For flamenco dance students with 6 months or more of experience, as well as flamenco musicians and aspiring flamenco musicians!

Ways to Dance Bulerias:

  • Fiesta por Bulerías or Fin de Fiesta por Bulerias: Typically done as a show finale or encore, or as an informal jam session.
  • At the end of a Flamenco piece: For example, at the end of a Solea or Alegrias.
  • As a solo: Featuring various “falsetas” (guitar melodies) and singing blocks.

Class Structure:

  • Dancing: 1 hour
  • Musicality & Rhythm: 30 minutes (includes compás, clapping, listening to examples, understanding lyrics and components)

Thursday, August 22, 6:00-8:00 pm (block between Isleville and Agricola streets)

Hosted in partnership with Aurora North End Parish Church, 5666 Sebastian Street, Halifax, NS
