Joint Seminar with NCEP: Formation of National Identities / Comparative Fundamental Rights

Wed, 15 Jan 2025, 16:00–19:00 CET

This class is offered in partnership with the Nouveau Collège d'Études Politiques (NCEP). Students will follow two seminars with NCEP professors and students. Please note the different dates/times and locations of the seminars.

While offered in partnership with the Columbia in Paris program, this is a local university course and fulfills the local university enrollment requirement for those students concerned.

The Formation of National Identities, Wednesday, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, January 15 - March 5 ONLY, Campus de Condorcet - NCEP (Aubervilliers)

This seminar examines the structuring of national groups since the end of the 18th century, contrasting them in particular with the forms of political organization that existed until then (empires, kingdoms, city-states). It examines the political, economic and cultural processes that led to the formation of national identities, and their recent resurgence. The seminar introduces the main theories on these issues and presents various empirical studies.

Comparative Fundamental Rights, Wednesday, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, March 12 - April 30 ONLY, Reid Hall

The seminar will explore the distinction between the concept of fundamental rights and freedoms, their proclamation and their translation into law: What are fundamental rights and freedoms, and how can they be identified? When and how did they emerge? On what justifications do democratic regimes base their protection and limitations?
