Shawl Technique
Shawl required. Please if you don't have a shawl, refer to my Shawl Guide and get yours ASAP.
The shawl technique teaches students the art of moving and holding the shawl, or "mantón". The class focuses on building upper body strength and mastering various sequences, such as turning and flipping the shawl. These skills are essential for effectively incorporating the shawl into dance. Students will learn to handle the shawl as an extension of their movements, gradually integrating these techniques into full choreographies, adding a new dimension to your flamenco repertoire and abilities. When ready, we will start working it into a new choreography, by november or later on in January, depending on how it goes!
Need a Shawl?
All you need to know is on my newly updated Shawl Guide. Including recommendations, prices and links. Ask around locally, some students or former dancers might have a shawl to lend to you or sell.
For New Students - About This Level
The group is for students with at least 6 years of flamenco dance training, attending classes approximately once a wee.k, or equivalent. It is a very welcoming group, with a majority of recurring students with diverse interests and abilities, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Currently, the group consists entirely of female dancers, however we would love to have more diversity in the group for sure.
Technique :
Footwork is an important aspect at this level. This fall, we are excited to introduce shawl technique, dedicating the first 30 minutes of each class to this new skill.
Choreography:
Choreographies are developed throughout the term. To fully benefit from the class and successfully learn the complete choreography, we recommend starting at the beginning of the term. This allows students ample time to develop their skills and memorize the choreography.
Previous Palos and choreographies:
In previous years, this group has learned a variety of palos, including alegrías, caracoles, soleá por bulerías, tientos, tangos, guajiras, and tangos de Málaga.
The video below (2021) of the class performing "Caracoles" will give you a good idea of the level of this class.
