Kia ora! Thank you for hosting this fantastic furniture restoration workshop with Jason Akuhata-Brown. Jason was so generous in freely sharing his enormous amount of knowledge and experience. His discussion was warmly interspersed with anecdotes of his whānau and work experiences, making it all the more memorable. Jason’s wonderful humour and his passion for his work absolutely shone, making the time fly by. I can’t believe how much he fitted into 2½ hours! I really enjoyed absorbing the collective knowledge and practical experience of the other attendees too. What a great group! The hands-on component of the workshop where we looked at the properties of different timbers was a highlight for me, as was the kōrero about how to identify furniture from various eras; looking for clues such as certain joinery features and finishes. The book recommendations were so useful and I’ve managed to source a couple of the books Jason mentioned, to assist my ongoing learning. Jason’s enthusiasm and knowledge was so infectious that on the following day, while driving with my husband I saw an old table on the roadside, looked at the leg shape, and yelled “Stop the car! It’s Arts and Crafts!” I took copious notes during the workshop, and I’m excited about putting my newfound learning into practice with some of my own neglected furniture. I could easily have spent a whole weekend learning with Jason. Should he arrange to run another workshop at the CAN, I’m definitely in! Once again, thank you for hosting and promoting this workshop. Ngā mihi nunui, Nā Robyn McCool
