CAOHC Certification Course
Virtual CAOHC Certification Course
Presented by Earmark Hearing Conservation
Occupational Hearing Conservationists are trained and credentialed through Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) approved courses. The training is essential for occupational health professionals who administer audiometric testing as required by OSHA, MSHA, DOD and FRA regulations. Dr. Wartinger (CAOHC Course Director #496199) leads a unique team-approach training where you will hear from multiple course directors and guest instructors throughout the course. This approach ensures high-quality, engaging instruction which addresses multiple learning styles and modalities.
Participation in a CAOHC-approved course, conducted by a CAOHC certified Course Director, is the first step to obtaining COHC (Occupational Hearing Conservation) recertification. All students must then pass a computer-based standardized examination at the conclusion of the course. An application and fee will be submitted to CAOHC on each student's behalf by Earmark Hearing Conservation. The recertification period is five years.
Virtual CAOHC Courses offered by Earmark Hearing Conservation are entirely online with no in-person requirements. Instruction, audiometric practicum, hearing protection device practicum, and examination are all completed through your computer.
Agenda:
Day 1: 9 AM to 4 PM
Day 2: 9 AM to 4 PM *Access to hearing protection devices between 2 - 3 PM
Day 3: 9 AM to 4 PM
Note: Class times are listed in ET (Eastern Time)
Technology and connection requirements
- Reliable high-speed internet connection
- Access to a computer for the full duration of course. Laptop or desktop computers are preferred since accessing the course on a mobile phone or tablet will likely result in a reduced quality experience and perhaps limited ability to access the interactive components and the standardized exam.
- Webcam (built-in or external) sufficient for routine video call participation. An active video and microphone connection is a requirement to take the online examination due to the need for effective proctoring. Please discuss technology exceptions with your course director prior to the course.
- Otoscope and a willing individual to serve as a stand-in patient (for a few minutes) during the practicum section on day 2. For participants who are experiences in otoscopic examination, alternative options may be discussed to complete this course requirement.
- Hearing protection devices (note: a selection of devices will be shipped out to each registrant 1-2 weeks prior to the course date)
- Access to an audiometer is not required during the course due to the extensive use of online simulators. However, many students report benefit from having access to a physical audiometer device for extended hands-on learning.

- Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear
- The Audiometer and Test Environment
- Audiometric Techniques
- Audiogram Referral and Follow-up

Manuals and Handouts
Many of the course resources and downloads are available online at http://www.earmarkhc.com/caohc-course-resources
Each student will receive access to the official online CAOHC Exam Prep study materials ($20 value)
The following items will be shipped to each participant 1-2 weeks prior to the course date:
- CAOHC Manual 5th edition ($80 value)
- Hearing Protection Devices - A selection of devices to be used during the practicum ($10 value)
- Course Handouts and references (priceless)
Otoscope Access
Otoscopic training is required to complete the course. During the course, you will need to have access to an otoscope and a willing individual to serve as a stand-in patient during practicum for a few minutes. If you have clinical experience with otoscopy, there are several alternatives training formats we can discuss which don't require a patient. If you are concerned you will not have access to an otoscope or another individual, please reach out to your course director for alternative methods to complete this requirement.
Continuing Education Credits
Eligible participants in this course will receive 20 hours of continuing education credits from Earmark Hearing Conservation and the DC Board of Nursing.

Relevant Feedback
All instructors were easy to follow and very informative. It was evident that they truly enjoy teaching this course and want to help each person understand the importance of protecting hearing and preventing hearing loss. This class was enjoyable while educational and I will definitely want to return for my recertification.
I’ve had the privilege of working in the fire service for over 30 years, earning around 10 certifications along the way. The instructors in this course stood out as exceptionally polite, reassuring, and informative - truly the best I’ve encountered. The virtual format was seamless and effective. I couldn’t find any areas for improvement - the course was outstanding just the way it was!
I have taken A LOT of virtual courses/trainings in my time as an ER nurse, but this was by far one of the best I’ve taken! Both instructors were extremely knowledgeable and engaging. I hate taking courses where you can tell the instructor is just reading off the slides. This was far from that. All the little tips and tricks were so helpful in understanding the material. It was truly an enjoyable week of learning! Thanks so much for a great course!
This course was great! The information was presented in a very clear, easy to understand manner. The instructors were down to earth and very open to questions/feedback and were very engaging. They made the course material more enjoyable and dedicated the time to help prep for the exam. Highly recommend!!
