Upgrade your certification to Sail Canada's Advanced Coastal Instructor Standard

Join us for a weekend clinic to help you certify as an Advanced Coastal Instructor.

Clinic Logistics

Departure: Ladysmith (marina and slip details to come)
Dates: Friday, April 24 to 26, 2026
Boarding: Friday, April 24 at 5:00 pm
DIsembark: Sunday, April 26 at ~5:00pm 

Fees: $990 per candidate (excl. taxes and food).

Please reserve your spot with a 25% deposit by Jan. 31.

Pre-weekend preparations: You can expect to attend two meeting before the sailing weekend to
  • Review the requirements and assignments for Advanced instructors
  • Introduce Sail Canada's learning management system (if required)
  • Set out lesson plan assignments ("classroom", dockside, under sail)
  • Discuss effective adult teaching methods
  • Review the agenda for the practical weekend
Homework: Please allow time for homework. This includes
  • Completion of working papers
  • Completion of the Rules of the Road exam to 90%
  • Preparing three lesson plans according to the assignments
Weekend activities:  The instructor/evaluators will be working on specifics of the agenda for the clinic before we commence in early February. We'll share the specifics when it's ready, but you can expect to deliver your lesson plans, which will include night sailing. 

Clinic format & key dates

Candidates are required to attend

  • A clinic kickoff meeting on Zoom on Monday, February 9, 2026
  • Two to three pre-clinic Zoom meetings will be scheduled for February and March 2026
  • Four intensive, in-person days from Friday evening, April 24, to Sunday, April 26, in Sidney, BC

Who should apply

Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising instructors with certifications in good standing, or requiring recertification (conditions apply).

Registering, deposits & final payment

Registration is first-come, first-served and will be limited to five instructor candidates. A minimum of four is required for the clinic to proceed.

Candidates are required to pay a 25% deposit when they register. Registration closes on January 31, 2026.

The balance of course fees is due on February 15, 2026.
