Turning Data into Decisions: Critical Thinking, Tools & Technology for Municipal Impact

This is a two-day program running Thursday, Feb. 26 and Friday, March 6. Participants must attend both days. Both days will be at Brock University with lunch and refreshments provided.

Every day, the City generates a vast amounts of data, a powerful resource with potential for operational excellence, strategic advantage, and stronger community trust. But how can this raw data be transformed into insights that drive confident, evidence-based decisions?

This workshop immerses participants in applied, hands-on learning tailored to public-sector realities. It starts with a refresh of core analytics and data governance concepts, ensuring returning participants consolidate their knowledge while new participants gain a strong introduction to essential frameworks. Participants learn to establish robust data foundations, classify and organize different data types, and prepare clean, reliable datasets that support meaningful analysis. The program also introduces data visualization and dashboard development in Excel, turning raw numbers into clear, compelling stories that inform recommendations, justify decisions, and guide reporting.

A brief overview of AI demonstrates how emerging tools can support trend identification and reduce manual work.

The program concludes by guiding participants to translate insights into practical actions, communicate findings effectively, and support leadership decision-making. By combining technical skills with analytical confidence, participants are empowered to foster a culture of evidence-based service, strategic action, and continuous improvement within the municipality.

This program builds on and expands on the content covered in Data-Driven Decision Making (DDDM). However, you do not need to complete DDDM to enroll in this program.
