Coaching Beyond the Technique
Coaching Beyond the Technique
Applied Emotional Intelligence for Experienced Firearms Instructors
Your students bring different experiences, expectations, and emotions to every class. The way you show up as an instructor influences how they feel. How they feel affects how fully they can engage—and their engagement shapes what they are able to learn.
Coaching Beyond the Technique helps experienced firearms instructors understand and develop the human skills that shape that learning environment. Using the Genos model of applied emotional intelligence, this course makes emotional intelligence practical and observable: how you recognize your own emotions, read the people you’re teaching, manage yourself under pressure, communicate honestly, make sound decisions, and help students feel seen and encouraged.
Through reflection, discussion, assessment, and applied practice, you’ll explore how these behaviors affect coaching in the classroom and on the range. You’ll build ways to adapt your approach, give feedback students can use, and create conditions that support attention, trust, and learning.
This course builds on your technical experience by developing the awareness and coaching behaviors that influence how your instruction is received.
In this course, you’ll develop your ability to:
- Recognize how your emotions and behavior affect the people you teach.
- Notice how students are responding and adjust your approach.
- Manage your reactions during challenging or high-pressure moments.
- Communicate with honesty and give clear, useful feedback.
- Make thoughtful decisions and recognize students’ effort and progress.
- Apply emotional intelligence skills to classroom and range instruction.
You’ll leave with:
- A practical framework for understanding emotional intelligence as observable behaviors.
- Personal insight into your coaching strengths and areas to develop.
- A plan for applying these skills in future classes.
- Ideas for bringing emotional intelligence into your coaching, drills, and learning environment.
