Virtual CAOHC Recertification Course

Presented by Earmark Hearing Conservation

Occupational Hearing Conservationists are trained and credentialed through Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) approved courses. The training is essential for occupational health professionals who administer audiometric testing as required by OSHA, MSHA, DOD and FRA regulations. Dr. Wartinger (CAOHC Course Director #496199) leads a unique team-approach training where you will hear from multiple course directors and guest instructors throughout the course. This approach ensures high-quality, engaging instruction which addresses multiple learning styles and modalities.

Participation in a CAOHC-approved course, conducted by a CAOHC certified Course Director, is the first step to completing your COHC recertification. All attendees must then pass a computer-based standardized examination during the course. An application and fee will be submitted to CAOHC on each attendee's behalf by Earmark Hearing Conservation. The recertification period is five years.

Virtual CAOHC Courses offered by Earmark Hearing Conservation are entirely online with no in-person requirements. Instruction, audiometric practicum, hearing protection device practicum, and examination are all completed through your computer.

Technology and connection requirements

  • Computer with webcam and reliable high-speed internet connection. Laptop or desktop computers are preferred since accessing the course on a mobile phone or tablet will likely result in a reduced quality experience and perhaps limited ability to access the interactive components and the standardized exam.
  • Please note that an active video and microphone connection is a requirement to take the online examination. Please discuss technology exceptions with your course director prior to the course.

Manuals and Handouts

Many of the course resources and downloads are available online to registered attendees.

If you requested Printed Course Materials at registration (a $95 add-on option), the below items will be shipped to you prior to the course date:

  • CAOHC Hearing Conservation Manual (6th Edition)
  • Printed Course Handouts
  • Hearing Protection Devices - A selection of devices for use during the practicum

Note: if you did not request Printed Course Materials, you will be shipped a a selection of Hearing Protection devices and receive access to electronic study materials. Access to the CAOHC Manual is not required for course completion, however we encourage students to bring their past manual and desk references with them to the course.

Otoscope Access

Otoscopic training is required to complete the course. During the course, you will need to have access to an otoscope and a willing individual to serve as a stand-in patient during practicum for a few minutes. If you have clinical experience with otoscopy, there are several alternatives training formats we can discuss which don't require a patient. If you are concerned you will not have access to an otoscope or another individual, please reach out to your course director for alternative methods to complete this requirement.

Audiometer Access

The Audiometric practicum will be held in a virtual format with a web-based computer audiometer simulator. Access to a physical audiometer and/or sound booth are not required to complete the course.

Continuing Education Credits

Eligible participants in this course will receive 8 hours of continuing education credits from Earmark Hearing Conservation and the DC Board of Nursing.

We look forward to seeing you in the course!

Frank is an amazing instructor - thank you for keeping things light and moving. We covered A LOT of information in 8 hours. Hannah was also wonderful. I usually have a very hard time focusing during online courses, but this held my attention. Appreciate all you do!

The last time I did my COHC recertification, it was in the live format so I wasn’t sure how the virtual version would go this time around. I was very happy with my experience and would highly recommend these instructors. Both were engaging, knowledgeable, kept the class paced appropriately, and had unique ways for us to complete the practicum portion of the recertification.

Instructor spoke very clear and was knowledgeable in all material. For a person very challenged with computers, this course had a lot of obstacles, but everyone was able to overcome each one.

This class was EXCELLENT! I have had the recertification class several times, but I’d say this was the best one. having the instructors tag-team helped break up the day. They were very organized, gave examples of practical real-life scenarios, and answered all the questions that were asked. You can tell that they enjoy teaching and they are good at it. I will recommend this class to anyone else that I can. Thank you for having the online version available.
